King’s Stoke, like many places in the Marches, is not the place it was a generation ago. The village was once a peaceful place, where we farmed the rich, dark soil we have farmed since the foundation of the Marches. We lived simple modest lives in harmony with the land.
Then, war came once more to the Marches. With the Mourn lost, King’s Stoke was soon close to the front lines. The blacksmith learned to make bills rather than ploughs. The baker made bread for rations, rather than to sell at market. As the front line came to us, we had to change. Once the militia was a concept we held at the odd practice after church. Now, the village exists to support the Militia. After a generation of fighting, there are too few of us to send only our best to war - when we go, we all go. No longer do we have the luxury of civilians - we must turn every hand to the militia to stay alive.
