One of the most successful events we've run was the Orcish-invasion PBB.
Our 3ygbs usually aren't. Of the 12 players who've 3ygbed in Cambridge, only 3 or 4 of them (Jon Hogg, Tom de Rivaz, ?Luke?, ?Felicity?, I think?) goodbyed.
As such, might it be fun to make our big end-of-year event something other than the traditional "a small bunch of PCs get upstatted, go off and do something, and never come back" model.
We could, for example, run a 3-day event, each day consisting of a separate adventure with a different third of the people there playing. Everyone would play one day and monster/ref two.
We could use the same refs each day, or different refs. They could be specially-appointed refs, or that year's refs.
The three days' plots could be closely, loosely or not at all linked.
As everyone would get a chance to play, it could be much more closely tied to that year's plotlines without excluding people.
We could upstat, or not, although if we did we'd presumably downstat again afterwards.
Does any of this appeal to anyone?

I'm fairly sure I suggested this a while back... The Aberystwyth group runs it's 3ygbs in this format, 3 linears, one after another, with a 2-1 Monster ratio (slightly upped by permanent monsters), followed by a large linear on the next day. E.g. Collect the three itenms required, then send a team to use them on the baddie. [Garuda]
The version of the above idea I'd most like to see, actually, would be a 3ygb run by or under the auspices of the year's ref team, as the culmination of one of that year's main plot arcs. --Jacob
I don't think we'd ever get a 3ygb run by the extant ref team. I think TT gains from it being run by new people. --Requiem
There are two obvious things that can be done about the foreshadowing problem: 1) Recruit 3YGB refs at Christmas, let them run a couple of things in Lent 2) Run a big event at the end of Lent term too (so we have the PBB at the end of Michaelmas, an event at the end of Lent and the 3YGB at the end of Easter), and use the Lent term event for the 'culmination of main plot arc' bit, leaving Easter term for 'pick up the pieces and introduce the 3YGB'. --ChessyPig
