He was supposed to be a "good" alias which Dot could change to if she got caught, and aside from that was supposed to be used to smite Oni, and learn more about them. Unfortunately, his first attempt to jump on that bandwagon was a bit rushed and the following events unfolded.
<conversation about scouting, smiting oni, hints at ability to do magic...>
Someone: "So, what god do you follow?"
Alex: "Hmm? Oh, Humact vaguely I guess. I mean, my parents do anyway. You know, you go to college and you drift away from these things."
Later, Alex is knocked out for being new and suspiciously keen to smite Oni. Above his body, this conversation happens:
Someone else: "Who is this guy?"
Someone: "He claimed to be a Humacti!"
Someone else: "Great! Most of them were killed last year! There's not many of them left, we'll ask if anyone's ever seen him before!"
So he was taken to the Temple of Humact, where of course noone knew him. Worse yet, he had been pretending to be infiltrating the Merchant Venturers, claiming he was hired by them so he could later reveal that he wasn't and that he had found they were up to all kinds of mischief, but he then got dragged to the Merchant Venturers to see if anyone recognised him, which of course they didn't either. Noone took him to the scouts guild, where someone would have recognised him! Lucky not to have been executed, he was given to the Militia to lock up for a few days, and decided to wait it out despite being easily capable of breaking out of the militia cells, in order to avoid further suspicion. But the Alias was kind of damaged by that stage so became a scapegoat.
Originally he was going to be a blatant Sordanite, but as Silas could reasonably "convert" (or whatever- no one mentioned a thing when he stopped wearing the feather and started wearing the hook instead!) I decided to put him into something else. The original concept image is here:
