A Brief History of Hibernia

Warning: May contain some inaccuracies as of latest Playerguide.

Hibernia is an island to the West of Albion, but not quite as far as Atlantis. It is mainly covered in forest and the natural wildlife is usually a bit larger than the corresponding creatures in Albion (although there are no swogs.) Hibernia has gone mainly unnoticed by those brave or foolish enough to attempting to reach Atlantis, and with reason. The entire island of Hibernia is subject to the actions and manifestations of the Witch Queen, a powerful and deranged Elemental who desires nothing more than to become a god. She views knowledge of both magic and the gods as threats to her ambitions, and hence has done much to ensure that the names of the gods and the magical thurgies are forgotten by the people of Hibernia. Very little comes into or out of Hibernia alive.

To the inhabitants she offers two choices; worship her as a god or be annihilated. It is not as simple a choice as it may seem, for those who turn to the service of the Witch Queen soon go mad and exhaust themselves to the point of death performing twisted rituals and rites, the effectiveness of which is completely unknown.

The Witch Queen has a great deal of power over nature and the weather; seasons change in days, and she may call forth huge beasts of stone and tree from the very earth and forests to fight for her. The scourge of the harsh extremes of weather, and length of day and night, are partly to thwart her enemies, but largely due to the insanity and highly unstable nature of the Witch Queen.

There is no one living who remembers a time before the Witch Queen, but legends do tell of a time when the seasons followed a pattern and the people of Hibernia lived without constant fear of attack. Small bands of warriors, usually from the same clan, form pockets of resistance which fight mainly for their own survival, but when they can will rally to strike a blow against the forces of the Witch Queen. In such clans it is usual for the men to go to battle and the women to tend for the children, prepare the food and occasionally act as sentries.
