TheInquisitor/CambridgeBelowPhotoshoot

Various people are writing systems, settings, and the like - with a view towards building an alternate system to run in place of CUTT next year.

This isn't one of those.

Instead, I'm focusing on the bit that interests me right now - costume and character design, and photography of such - plus just enough worldbuilding to support it.

The aim is that I (and other people, if they are interested) will set up a series of photoshoots around Cambridge - probably mostly on bits that are iconic, at least to the locals. I'm not planning to run true events, nor am I intending to take it further (although if other people want to, then they are welcome). The kit... well, you'll see, but it should work out as things from people's kit collections, or sourced from charity shops for peanuts... so I'm not expecting this project to cost much.

The end result, I hope, will be a series of illustrations of interesting events, with no context or overarcing plot. Illustrations from a book nobody has written, or perhaps shots from an event that was never run. If someone wants to go in later, and write the story, then more power to them. (If the pictures are decent, I'll look at getting a short-run photobook made, but the primary publication is online).

Anyway, the setting - and this owes more than a little to Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere (which should be considered strongly recommended reading):

There are people that society likes to pretend don't exist - the mad, the bad, the down on their luck - and sometimes, just those who don't have anybody right now. Ignored, overlooked, or just plain written out of society, they are the Forgotten. They're not all simple vagrants, by any means - it's a communicable condition, and those who pay too much heed to the ones that society shuns risk joining them.

The Forgotten are well aware of each other, and have their own society, of a sort, between the gaps of our own. On what do they live? Why, all of the things that we have forgotten - rubbish, bric-a-brac, antiques, the obsolete, and objects abandoned in dusty attics. And as well as things, they recover and use ideas, skills, and even philosophies.

Apart from starvation, neglect, and each other, the Forgotten face another peril: that of being forgotten even by their fellows. What happens to such people? None know, but they assume it is bad. Known as the Envoys of Oblivion, there is a group who seeks to take away any they can catch - the names of those so taken are lost to memory almost immediately, and it is assumed that since they are not a recent problem, they must have taken people in the more distant past, but nobody can recall a case of such. As to who, or what, they are? Theories abound, but none know.

Those who leave the environs of Cambridge to venture further afield either return quickly, and with tales of great danger, or not at all - but some of those who attempted the journey are, at least, remembered - which is some small comfort.

Faced with this, the Forgotten have banded together into communes and tribes, tying themselves to their fellows, living in each others pockets, and building group identities and names for themselves - there are many currencies used for barter in the shadows, but perhaps the greatest, greater even than favours owed, is the fame (or infamy) that ensures ongoing survival.

So, kit suggestions:

The Envoys of Oblivion wear those Soviet greatcoats we have so many of kicking around, full-face gas masks (I'll get some), dark trousers, and dark boots. Hands always in pockets. They are faceless enemies to be used where antagonists are wanted in-shot, and played by anyone handy.

When kitting a Forgotten, aim to draw clothing from some subset of vintage fashion, the deliberately archaic (suggested eras: WW2, victoriana, medieval - steampunk and fantasy kit appropriate for the latter two), and scavenged anachronisms - then remember that people aim to look distinctive, and ideally to tie their appearance into their skills, or whatever they are (or want to be) known for. The Mad Max aesthetic is certainly appropriate for the more violent. Finally, remember that tribes and other groups will attempt to tie their appearance together with some combination of matching items, colour schemes, matching or coordinated facepaint, etc.

Aim to kit just one Forgotten (but feel free to have them in multiple outfits) - recurring characters are a good thing, and I don't want to re-use faces. Consider trying to establish tribal themes with anyone you happen to be able to coordinate with, but especially those you can (or want) to appear in photoshoots with.

This is draft 1 of my attempting to get on paper a project I've been mulling over for a while. Feel free to express interest, ask questions, or make suggestions...

There is currently no planned timeline. If there is interest, I'll start shooting people when they're ready, and once the project has either peaked or snowballed, I'll put some sort of deadline on it, then aim to produce a final coherent photoset. If interest continues, I'll consider iterating for a season 2. I don't intend to write a narrative, but I want to include a lot of elements which suggest there is one, so if people turn up with bits of characterisation they wish to try and exhibit, or scenes they'd like to see, the input will be very welcome.

One thing it occurs to me to suggest is Slendermanesque shots where Envoys are visible in the background of shots where the focus is on something else, so that you only notice them if you're looking. --Jacob
I like, especially when shots are done in populated streets, and there are lots of normal people around. (Planning to go there, if I can). --I

INTERESTED! Just FYI I have one if those greatcoats if you're wanting 'em in force for a shoot. -Kelpie

I'd be interested - I have some clothes that would suit this --dp

Interested and can do makeup --Porange

Photos are my favourite! --Steph

Super interested, definitely want to be involved! --Pia
