Actual background etc:
Emily was a drow until the changing of the races, but remained a true elf due to an abiding lack of skill in magic and no real desire to remain fighting the wars in the underdark, or taking part in the complex webs of drow intrigue. Also because it's quite nice to be able to wear armour.
Moving to the overbright, she has served a term as an archer in the King's army in Gaul, and took a transfer into the king's spy network when that campaign was ended. Having 'retired', she has ended up in Grantabrugge due to its vital strategic location. She's also a lay Mallanite. She supports the king in part because she believe that Wessex needs a strong leader, and that the queen has not demonstrated this capacity by losing a war against a fifteen year old.
