Tea/Ardan

CLSWiki | Tea | RecentChanges | Preferences | Main Website

Ardan Flynn is a young swashbuckler, out to demonstrate his skill and daring and slake his thirst for adventure. Wears the favour of his lady Larksong Nightbird, a famous bard in the city. He has been on a number of adventures, including being one of the few present at the death of Ivan of Humact, and spoke at his memorial. Is currently a little short on working limbs, but has successfully slain the fell drake of the fens. When not horribly injured, he tends to occupy his time with duelling, fighting, occasional acting, and working hard in his bard (fnar).

I note, for anyone considering doing this, that you really don't want to play a character like this in CUTT. The lack of armour is a phenomenal handicap. Not because you have less hits: a fight that's going to drop Ardan would also almost certainly drop Ardan in armour. But because you do not get your hits back. On the other hand, as long as you remember you're a glass cannon, it's great fun to play with.

Also, this is not a legal character sheet. The double-buy of Combat Awareness IV isn't permitted, because I don't have the appropriate prerequisite. Fixing this is fairly simple: substitute in Income I, shuffle Health III into third level, and then add Combat Awareness IV just after Warrior IV. This gives minimal disruptions, more drastic options are possible.

Look, it's Inquisitor's meme!

1. Your character is being announced at the Royal Ball by the most pompous, enthusiastic and long-winded Master of Ceremonies in recorded history. What do they declaim?

"Ardan Flynn, Rescuer of Mages, Arrester of Traitors, Protector of Villages, Enemy of the Midwife, Defender of Leylines, Foe of the Fae, Slayer of the mighty Drake of the Fens, Challenger of Karnak Prime, and Warrior of his Lady!"

2. Give a 6-word backstory and/or history for your character, prior to their entering play - it is needed for the character bio on the back cover of this season's DVD.

Idealistic lad flees boredom, seeks heroism.

3. However improbable it may seem, your character just won a boasting competition. What was their winning boast?

"Yes, that's a very impressive duelling scar you have there. Have you seen this one? It's from the time I slew a drake."

4. Your character loses a hand irrevocably, and is given the opportunity to have something grafted on to replace it. What do they pick?

Something with multifunctional attachments. He'd need one for holding a buckler, one for general social purposes, and one for... let's just finish the sentence there, shall we?

So far, however, his hand loss is probably not irrevocable.

5. What one impossible thing would you most like to have, be, or be able to do, in order to better physrep your character?

Less 'impossible' than 'impractical', but a chandelier in the WA and the ability to swing on it.

6. Your character is asked by their immediate superior which one thing they would choose to save from their dwelling, were it on fire. Sensing that a flippant answer is not called for, how do they instead answer?

"My Lady. If my Lady is not present at the time, the mounted head of the drake I killed."

7. Your character was abducted by Nightmares (or local equivalent) on the way out of the Arms, and wakes up in a sack (just as armed as they left the pub). What do they have in their pockets, and what one further thing do they wish they had also picked up from home this morning?

He doesn't have pockets. Carried on his belt is a rapier and 10-20 shillings. He may have interesting concealed magical items as well.

8. Your character's life is flashing before their eyes. Describe briefly any two of the following: Leaving their childhood home. Losing their first love. The first time they killed. The first time they lost a comrade. Another occasion on which they nearly died. A time they lowered their standards. A time they abandoned hope. Something that terrified them.

The young lad looked back down the muddy track at the village behind him. Forty odd houses, and a fairly normal inn -- not much there for a man seeking heroism and adventure. He put on his hat, picked up a feather from the side of the road and jammed it into the hatband at a jaunty angle, and set off for somewhere a little more interesting.

The fens were swampy and damp. He had spent all day fighting swogs and skirmishing with a local group of goblins. Finally, the drake had shown itself. Every bit as large as the reports had said and he had seen, and rather more worrying than he had expected when charging. Still, the wet ground was firm enough that he had good footing to fight on, and at least some of his comrades were decent fighters (or just very well equipped). So he balanced, readied his blade, and fought, diving sideways out of the way of those terrible jaws, or ducking the lashing tail, for what seemed like an age. The great beast had now taken many blows, but its thick hide would have protected it from much of this. So he waited for it to attack again, and this time instead of evading, placed his sword and hand fully into the mighty jaws. As it crunched down, the pain was far worse than anything he had yet experienced. The bleeding stump of his arm spat fitfully onto the fen floor as consciousness began to slip away from him.

9. Your character wakes up in a Militia cell with no clear memories of their last few hours. Given time to think it over, why will they conclude they are there?

Someone insulted Larksong. The aforementioned person is probably now in the temple of Azrael.

10. Your character was obliged to leave town. As they fled, they left messages with a trusted friend. Most of them dealt with religious and social obligations, and put in place provision for their return (or otherwise) - but they found time for one quick personal note. Who is it to, and roughly what does it say?

"I will be back for you, Larksong, do not fear. -Ardan"
