Lancaster University Role-playing Society, or LURPS, is based where you would expect. With a mix of students and area residents, it has a varied body of players, and usually quite a lot of fun.

It has a tendancy to get dominated by one clique, runs a rather complex system, and has a bit of a cop-out with monsters, working on the (the next time you see the monsters, they will be...) basis, instead of costumes. With no interactives of any description, there is little sense of the PCs being a group, and the giving of xp can bet complex.

Working on a multi-hpl system, LURPS uses a subtractive system of armour, with a minimum of 1 point. This means that a fightet might have 15 hits on his chest, a single does 5 hits, but he's wearing enough armour to reduce it to 1 point. So eventually, the bruises will get him. It also uses a total-body-hits counter, which results in battle-boarding by the player ref after each fight. You can die from overall damage, or lose a limb and carry in. Realistic, but a pig to keep track of, with much paperwork. The magic system works well, similar to TT but with mages taking damage for casting spells. Making it horribly easy to die from over-casting.

Character advancemment is xp based, with the monsters grading each PC after the linear on their costumes, character integrity, safety, role in party, etc. Which can be very good, or very bad.

There are no levels to this system at all, so linears are advertised on the basis of total xp, e.g a 500pt linear. Characters start at 100xp, and get their xp reduced by going on linears below their status, and raised by going on linears too hard for them.

An interesting aside for this system is the concept of monster credit. Gamers earn monster credit by monstering. Those with the most get first choice of whether or not to play on a linear, which can result in a totally mismatched party. It also allowed me to monster for 2 terms then play for weeks on end.

Monsters - those who cannot or do not wish to play
