So, uber secret background then.
Iris had some grandparents on her mother's side, they came from a small village in the fens called Wainton on the Marsh, they eloped to Grantabrugge in order to get married.
Wainton was an 'interesting' village, the people there worshipped their ancestors, and liked them to hang around after death. Yes, they were necromancers and worshipped the undead.
Fast forward fifty years or so. History/YearFourLinearFour. Iris heard it being discussed in the Temple of Humact and put the name of the village together with her mother's maiden name (Wainton). Then the Orcs invaded, Iris was a bit busy for a while but after things had calmed down a bit she went to talk to one of the surviving members of the expedition, Carla.
After some initial being very cautious around each other Iris told Carla all about her worries (about being related to vivamortians) and Carla was very kind and sympathetic. Carla also swore not to tell anyone unless it had caused harm in the past, might cause harm in the future or conflicted with her duty to god or temple. (Can you spot the loophole here). In all fairness, Carla never explicitly blackmailed Iris.
Iris went on the 3YGB to Teutonia to attempt to stop it from exploding, she failed in this, she also managed to be the only PC to survive. People have been asking what happened to her after this.
So, consumed with guilt, having lost everyone she had tried to protect and her blessing from Humact, she branded herself with her holy symbol and went to attempt to destroy Walach.
Destroying Walach being the last thing she felt she could do for Mary. She was also half hoping to get killed.
She found Walach, asked (demanded) his phylactory and attempted to kill him. A couple of encounters later she found him in a village he claimed was his home. Whereupon she threatened to destroy it if he didn't hand over his phylactory. When she started killing villagers Walach decided she'd be better off dead.
She was raised as some king of spectral undead, retaining most of her magic and all of her angst.

Not picking up the sword of Humact, I doubt I would have succeded in returning it to him, but I should have made the attempt.

She's a bit of a wuss, and seems to have rather unpleasant plans for me at the moment. Also, she makes me far too trusting. (lol Carla)
