The only ranking member of crew who seems to remember which side of the ship is starboard. He is a mage of some repute and manages to somehow keep the ship going where it should, most of the time. He seems cynical and grumpy to most, partly due to age and partly due to a life seeing exactly what the various beings of the world can do to each other.
He has been sailing for several centuries and has been onboard the "phoenix" longer than Val, owes her for freeing him from his servitude to the ships previous owners. Often seen either bickering with the captain, holed up in his cabin attempting some new research or relaxing in the crows nest with a stiff breeze and a stiff rum.
Vin only spent a short time in grantabrugge though it was eventful.
After appearing and acting as damage control for his wayward captain who he had last seen plunging off the side of the ship somewhere near wallachia, Vin had an eventful second week in town where he had an altercation with a dwarf that left him screaming and needing an 'emergency ritual' which he survived. Later he was dragged on an uneventful walk on the fens with Iska and some companions. Finally whilst morning the burning of the phoenix and all of his research notes at the bottom of a bottle, he turns up to the arms to find that Vala has been transported to a far off land and Iska is being threatened with exile.
Last seen being dragged from the bar by Iska for a quest to distant lands beyond the realm of any map to find the captain, via a swift dunk in the sea.
