Edwin de Lacey, of the dying line of a minor noble family, arrived in the city in the Autumn of 1292 from the westernmost parts of the Seven Shires, on the Cymric borders. On his first night in the city he was offered a place within the militia and took the then Lieutenant, Charles de Potterne, up on his offer. When the city suffered a massive influx of refugees he began works to establish a proper camp with facilities for them and quickly became allied with Lady Darcy Nottingham in her efforts, finding common ground in the faith of Mallan as well. He progressed rapidly up the ranks so that by the end of spring he was Charles' right hand man and it was he that discovered Charles' aid for enemies of the city just as the Lieutenant fled the city.

In his place Edwin was made Acting Sheriff by the now Mayor Darcy and within a handful of weeks had publicly proposed and married to Lady Rosamund Arundel. Almost immediately after he was announced as Sheriff of Grantabrugge and began the reform of the Militia. In the Autumn of 1293 a daughter, who was named Lucia, was born to him and the Lady Rosamund. In public life he has led a strict enforcement of the law across the city having been involved in the Case of the Scarlet Swog, the Case of the Many Masked Priest and the Case of the Bloody Merchant Venturers Who We Caught Red Handed At Last.

At Midwife Moon he carried the Butterknife of Humact into battle against the undead and returned the babe, Matthew, to Ruthilda.

Large part of Edwin is drawn from film noir, the original concept with him being a sort of medieval Philip Marlowe.
