She was murdered in the Arms by a robber with a vastly overkilled poisoned arrow, and died instantly. I'd like to think she went to Ishmund herself, and is waiting...
It would be... somewhat amiss of me... to talk about Sarah without admitting that my first thought on meeting her was "Mmm. I'll have some of that..." And, er, I did. And as I got to know her, she turned out to be one of the most remarkable people I have ever had the privilege to know. Sarah was volatile and fiery, but also fiercely loyal, friendly and compassionate. She was a woman of action, always willing to throw herself into a fight for a just cause, and speak out for what she felt was right. And she loved life itself, and lived every minute of it to the full.
I don't think Sarah would have wanted her life before she came to Grantabrugge dwelled on particularly, but I will say that although she was of noble birth, she overcame this admirably and turned into someone I was proud to know and love.
Sarah came to the study of magic fairly late; her innate talent was, er, spotted at the age of sixteen by Arthur Rivers. The morning after he suggested she turn her desire to leave home into something useful. So she did, turning up in Grantabrugge a few weeks later and being offered a place at the College of Fire within the day. And, occasional problems with controlling the fire she created aside, she learned quickly and enthusiastically under the guidance of my father, Ignatius.
Nor should we forget her exploits as a warrior and adventurer. She killed her first necromancer a little over a year ago, and I am given to understand that the look on her face when she managed to do this with a scroll of Disrupt was a wonderful sight to behold. Further adventures dealing with possessed necromantic kender and saving the Bastite temple from malign influences followed soon after. But her greatest triumph was her part in the slaying of the Tormentor along with Joel, Edgar, Sesqui, James Dervish and Mayor Eric. I think the less said about the aftermath of that adventure the better, though her reasons for spending several days around the time of Antenor's death out fighting his minions in defence of Grantabrugge had some more.. personal basis on top of her willingness to fight to defend her city.
Sarah recently found herself rather more closely linked with the temple of Ishmund than she might have expected. But her honesty, integrity and willingness to fight for justice matched the ideals of the Church closely, and as such her becoming attached to it, as well as to one of its members, was not entirely surprising to those who knew her well.
But, all that said, Sarah's defining characteristic to me was her capacity to love. Her desire for companionship, closeness and to truly know people led her to make a great many friends... and, it must be said, lovers in the more conventional sense of the word. Her affection and interest in people had no barriers set by race or gender. In fact, like everything in life, she treated the differences between the races... and abilities arising from them... as something to be celebrated and enjoyed. But when the time came for her to fall in love she did so truly, deeply and with absolute devotion. When I met Joel, I realised that he was, if you'll excuse the pun, the perfect match for her. Their contrasting personalities were a perfect complement to each other, their mutual affection was... obvious... and above all they made a good *team*. I firmly believe that one day they will be reunited in the realm of Ishmund- and what a day that will be.
I have one more thing to say. Sarah requested in her will that we now get on with the party, and furthermore that she will be disappointed if no-one pulls at it. And knowing Sarah, if she has any way to check, she will. So.. er... go and get on with it, and celebrate her life in the way she would have wanted.
