They met some parents looking for their son, found a herballist who observed the birds had gone silent, found an abandoned cart full of odd bits of wood and surrounded by footprints that disappeared, found a body and determined the cause of death was something tree ghoullish.
Then they met the tree ghouls on finding the mages were all dead, were taken into 'protective custody' by queens men, did their best to keep said queens men alive whilst under constant attack by the beasties, found the lost boy, kept him alive too, found his parents, just about kept them alive, and fought constantly to get through the ghoul infested woods to a place of safety. Some of the queens men even made it out!
